Root Canal Therapy

Acworth Center for Family Dentistry’s in-house team of dental specialists provides root canal therapy to patients who are experiencing pain from an infection or inflammation inside of a damaged tooth. A root canal procedure is performed when the pulp of the tooth is damaged, causing prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, discoloration, swelling, tenderness and recurrent pain.

When you visit our Acworth-area dental office for root canal therapy, our in-house root canal specialist, called an “endodontist,” will conduct an X-ray and administer a local anesthetic to numb the tooth. Our endodontist will then place a dental dam over the tooth, which will allow the area to stay sanitary and saliva-free during the root canal procedure. An opening will then be made in the crown of the tooth, and the pulp chamber will be cleaned from infection or inflammation. We will determine if you should schedule a final visit with your dentist to place a dental crown on the tooth in order to protect the area and improve its functionality.

Often, root canal therapy can be performed in our office in as little as one or two visits. To schedule an initial consultation with Acworth Center for Family Dentistry’s root canal specialist, please call (770) 203-1711 or schedule an appointment online.

Although all dentists understand the basics of root canal therapy, a root canal specialist completes dental school and an extra two years of advanced training in endodontics to learn more about the inside of the tooth and how to perform a high-quality root canal procedure.

There are many benefits to saving your tooth with root canal therapy, including:

  • Maintaining the appearance of your natural smile
  • Retaining bite strength
  • Protecting additional teeth from damage or wear
  • Preventing the need for additional dental treatments

If you undergo a root canal procedure and care for the tooth properly (following the directions the endodontist provides for you after treatment), the treated tooth should last as long as your natural teeth ‐ for a lifetime!

At Acworth Center for Family Dentistry, we use the latest dental technology during our root canal therapy procedures to make our patients as comfortable as possible. Our patients may also choose to undergo sedation dentistry, if they are experiencing anxiety about receiving root canal therapy. After the treatment is over, you may experience sensitivity in the tooth, which can be relieved with over-the-counter or prescription medications.

We’ll give you detailed instructions about caring for your tooth after you have undergone a root canal procedure; however, as a rule of thumb, do not chew or bite with the treated tooth until your dentist has restored it. We encourage scheduling a restorative dental procedure as soon as possible, as your treated tooth may fracture if it is not fully-protected.

If you’re interested in learning more about root canal therapy or wish to discuss your options with our root canal specialist, please call (770) 203-1711 to schedule an appointment. Our practice is located in Acworth, GA, and we provide our patients with an array of in-house dental services, including general dentistrycosmetic dentistry and more.
